Faith

It’s Faith-refresher Wednesday

This tends to happen a lot around our house:

Ted walking past me and saying, “What?”

Me replying, “Huh?  I didn’t say anything.”

“But,” Ted persists, “You sighed.”

I will do the same with Ted.  Sometimes as he comes up from his basement office, he reaches the top step and lets out a big sigh.  “What?”  I’ll ask him.  Haha – it’s usually just nothing – just a big weary breath after climbing the stairs!

But many times our sighs are indeed a wordless response to something we feel or something we’ve seen or read.  It’s sweet that Ted notices when I sigh and many times he will persist in getting me to verbalize what’s on my mind.

You know, if you don’t communicate and express what you really are thinking, you can get yourself into trouble with a response to the question of “What’s wrong?” with a reply of “Nothing!”images7lvon

I’ve started reading through the Psalms and sometimes the wording of a passage just strikes a chord with me.  Today my NIV version of the bible stated chapter 5 verse 1 this way:

Psalm 5:1 Give ear to my words, O Lord, consider my sighing.

Not only does God HEAR our prayers, but in those times when we don’t even know what to pray, our God knows our heart and our thoughts.  He considers our sighing and knows just how we feel.

I know there have been many times when the challenges of life have worn me down so much and the fatigue has set in – when I know I need to talk to God but there are no words.  And so I cry, or I moan, or I sigh.

And He knows just what I mean.

Tell me more (about SB) Mondays

Psalm 118:24 This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Every day is a gift from God.  I believe that.  And if today is the day that happens to be the day you were born, well then you are part of the rejoicing in this day!

I don’t understand the ‘evil’ that some religions say is in celebrating birthdays.  If this is the day the Lord has made (and we know that He also made ALL things – you and me as well), and we are told to rejoice and be GLAD in it – then let’s celebrate today!  And if today is your birthday, let’s celebrate the birthday girl or boy!

So,

Today is my birthday!

And while I don’t usually want to be recognized with any attention or fuss at the fact that I have aged another year, I thought I would talk about birthdays and then share how great my family is and how they rejoiced and were glad for … me!

I have to first recognize my parents and how great it was to have dinner yesterday at “Three Hermanos”  Yum – yes we are talking Mexican food.  Thanks Mom and Pop for dinner!  Like always, I ate too many chips with salsa and my dinner of spinach mushroom enchiladas were delicious.  The birthday check in the birthday card was also much appreciated.  (Thanks Dad, too, for the card & check.)

‘Amazon’ delivered a birthday present on Friday to me – A cookbook from Ric & Kristen!  Although I DO eat meat, I prefer to eat a lot of vegetarian meals lately.  I shared with Kristen the fantastic vegetarian meals I’ve been making lately from my ’emeals’ menus – but Kristen took me up a notch with Martha Stewart’s spin on meatless meals.DSCI0005

Monkey Amanda gave me the perfect card with the gift of a French coffee press (I think Ted helped to pick it out!)DSCI0007

So why a French coffee press?  Ted and I have a Keurig coffee maker that we LOVE and prefer for making our morning cup(s) of coffee.  However, I brought back some very fine coffee from my mission trip to Guatemala.  Keurig coffee makers require K-cups and although we have the gizmo that allows you to ‘load’ your own coffee grounds into it to make a Keurig cup of coffee, it is really too much of a hassle.  Fellow mission team member Fred had the same problem and recommended the French Press.  Now we can drink some of the superb Guatemalan coffee.  (That’s a cloth bag of some of the coffee I bought in the background)DSCI0002

Ted’s card made me cry:DSCI0006

Awww … he’d marry me all over again!  It was a very sweet card.

Now to tie this all into my Monday blog theme of it being ‘Tell me more about SB Mondays’ I just want to say that each and every birthday that a person with spina bifida has is indeed a super big awesome reason to celebrate.  All those extra challenges that SB throws at a person make each day more precious and special.  So each passing year is an accomplishment and a reason to rejoice.

Ted’s card continued on the inside to say that if he could he’d go back to relive every happy moment because he can’t imagine anything better than that – unless it’s to look forward to all the moments that are still ahead for us.

No matter the ups and downs, the challenges, or the ways SB has affected our lives through the years … it’s all the good times that we remember and that make life so sweet.  That also paves the way for the hope for the good times yet to come.thisistheday

Thanks for the birthday greetings everyone!

Faith

It’s Faith-refresher Wednesday

ahha

I usually pray for inspiration to write my blogs.  Sometimes a thought or idea smacks me in the face.  Sometimes I read a bible passage that runs in contrast to a life situation.  Many times music inspires me.

This past Monday’s blog was inspired by the Gospel reading that was part of last Sunday’s sermon.  But also last Sunday at our traditional service, we sang an old hymn, “All Depends on Our Possessing.”  It’s not at all one of the top most familiar hymns like “Amazing Grace” or “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” or “How Great Thou Art”.  But the lyrics were incredible.  I really enjoy Christian music including the old stuff and the new contemporary music.  But the new music can be slim on lyrics and often resort to a much repeated chorus of “Praise Him, Praise Him, Alleluia” or some such thing over and over again.  The lyrics to this hymn were so poetic … so true … so heart felt.

Many spend their lives in fretting
Over trifles and in getting
Things that have no solid ground.
I shall strive to win a treasure
That will bring me lasting pleasure
And that now is seldom found.

If on earth my days He lengthen,
He my weary soul will strengthen;
All my trust in Him I place.
Earthly wealth is not abiding,
Like a stream away is gliding;
Safe I anchor in His grace.

Can you believe that these lyrics were written by an unknown author somewhere around 1673?  The original was in German but translated to English by dear Catherine Winkworth in 1858.  Here’s the rest of the lyrics and info if you are curious:

http://www.hymntime.com/tch/htm/a/l/d/aldepend.htm

The music that goes with this song was by Johann B. Konig in 1737.  I found a lovely harp version in case you would like to hear it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=edufZqFPwdQ

Now you just don’t find lyrics like that today.  I made a note on my church bulletin to somehow use this song in a blog … and today after work as I sat down to write – it all became clear to me.

In the light of Robin Williams’ death … now I am not judging at all about why he did it and I do not understand deep depression or mental illness …, but I do think that too many people live lives that are so empty and without purpose.  How many times have all of us heard about the self-inflicted death of someone who seemed to have everything in this world – Success?  Health?  Money?  And folks, that’s just the problem – if you depend on happiness through things of this world, ya ain’t gonna be happy!  Like the lyrics of this song so poetically state:  “Many spend their lives in fretting … over trifles and in getting … things that have no solid ground.”

Again – I am not judging because I did not know the mind of Robin Williams.  I have heard that he was a generous man.  But whatever tormented him, whatever made him so sad, whatever it was that he may have been missing … he will deal with those things with his maker in heaven.  But may his passing remind us that it is not the earthly wealth and trifles that will satisfy us.

Nothing in this world lasts.  Nothing in this world can we take with us in the end.

Lasting pleasure is only through trusting and abiding in Christ Jesus.

He is our treasure.

1 Timothy 6:7-10 For we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have Proverbs 10_22food and clothing, with these we will be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.

Tell me more (about SB) Mondays

Our sermon at church yesterday was based on this great bible passage:

Matthew 14:22-33 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd.  After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.  Later that night, he was there aloneand the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.  Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake.  When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them:  “Take courage!  It is I. Don’t be afraid.”  “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”  “Come,” he said.”  Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”  Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him.  “You of little faith,” he said, “Why did you doubt?”  And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down.  Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”aDifferentWay3

This is a great story to all Christians with the message of keeping our eyes on God.  He won’t let us sink, if we trust Him in all ways!

However, I happened to see another lesson in this passage.

The story begins with Jesus sending the disciples ahead while he finished meeting with the people.  He wasn’t worried about staying late.  He wasn’t stressing out about making plans as to where and when he would meet up with them.  He didn’t ask them to wait or keep the boat near shore for Him.  And then Jesus even took more time to talk to His heavenly Father.  And THEN He took the time to join up with His disciples.  And He took the shortest route – walking on the water out to the boat!

My point?

How often in our busy lives do we get caught up on hurrying and rushing to get all those important things done?  Even before we finish one thing, we are planning on what we will get to next.  Jesus had people to see and did not hurry or worry.  He tended to what He needed to do and caught up with His disciples later.  Albeit, He walked on water to get to them.  But He found a way to get there.

How often do we worry about how we are going to finish our college education?  Or where we will find the money this month to pay the bills?  Maybe your challenge is to get through the next week without a cigarette?  Or are you exhausted and wondering how you will survive those sleepless nights with a sick baby?

We are all trying to get from point ‘A’ to point ‘B’ … and probably worrying ourselves sick about how we’re going to do it.  Jesus didn’t worry.  We are told not to worry.

Matthew 6:34  So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.aDifferentWay

I think this is a great attitude that many spina bifida families have learned to roll with.  We can’t dwell or worry about, “Will my SB child attend regular school?  Will my SB child walk?  Will my SB child be able to _____?”  We take one day at a time, and we find different ways to get from point ‘A’ to point ‘B’.

The other day on one of the spina bifida FB pages I follow, a mom talked about her child in a wheelchair who saw someone jump rope and they wanted to as well.  The mom handed a jump robe to their child and the kid flipped the rope forward over their head then wheeled over the rope and continued on – jumping rope.  Adorable!  They were jumping rope – just a different way.  And all those wheelchair sports you see – people conquering sports while seated in their wheelchairs!  Still playing the sport – just in a different way! adifferentway4

Why do we stress about laying out the plans for all that we do?  Why can’t we trust God and let Him pave the way?

It made me think of the saying, “there’s more than one way to skin a cat.”  Ewww.  That is really not a nice thing to think about – literally skinning a cat.  Of course, it means that we should all know that there is more than one way to accomplish something.  But I have to share this photo I found when I searched under that little saying …. Clever isn’t it?  That cat is being turned inside out!aDifferentWay2

This subject also made me think of the song, “God Will Make A Way” and here is the first part of it (google it if you don’t know it):

God will make a way
Where there seems to be no way
He works in ways we cannot see
He will make a way for me.

Spina bifida families out there – you rock!  You find ways to help your child get from point ‘A’ to point ‘B’ and the ways are creative and inspiring!  No worries.  Just one day at a time and strength and faith to boldly press on.

God wants us to trust Him in all things and in all ways.  He is probably working in your life right now – helping you with your challenge.  Just keep in mind that what might seem impossible to you is POSSIBLE through Christ.  He will help you get there – it just might be in a different way.

Even Peter got to walk on water!

man cave

Faith

It’s Faith-refresher Wednesday

I came across this comic in last Sunday’s paper.  I thought it was funny.  Man cave!  Haha.

scan

I know what a man cave is but I looked up a definition anyway.  The simple one was:  “a male sanctuary”.  This definition elaborated:  “An emotional sanctuary for men when they’re stressed and need “space” or time away from females, responsibilities, etc.”

Well I am reading this book my friend loaned me called, “Christ the Lord, The Road to Cana” by Anne Rice.  It is a novel of the life of Christ before his ministry.  It gives you the feeling of what life was like for Jesus in ancient Jerusalem – about things he did, what his home life may have been like, and events that may have happened and led up to the life of Jesus we know about from the bible.  Ann Rice has Jesus visiting the Garden of Gethsemane quite often as a favorite, peaceful place where he can retreat to.  I thought it was rather like his man cave!  Well, why not?  We all know how Jesus went to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray before Judas came there to betray him.  It couldn’t have been Jesus’ first visit there.  It was where He went when he was stressed, or needed “space” … it was His Sanctuary. Gethsemane

Gethsemane means “olive oil press” in Greek and the Garden is believed to actually be a grove of olive trees where a press was also located.  I bet it was a cool place.  A grove of beautiful old olive trees whose leaves probably whispered to Jesus when he visited.

Gethsemane2

It made me think 🙂

We ALL need a man cave – women too!  Maybe you have one.  Jesus knew the importance of getting away from people and the problems of the outside world.  It was a place where He could pray and find peace.  It doesn’t have to be an actual cave.  Maybe your special space is that comfy corner chair with a cup of coffee when no one else is home.  Some people find solace when they can go to their bedroom and close the door to be alone with their thought and prayers.  Many people actually have a garden where they can sit and reflect. Gethsemane3

It doesn’t matter what or where your man cave is.  The point is, everyone needs a place where they can go to be alone with God.  I hope you all have that space and take the time.

I hope you find your own Garden of Gethsemane.

Just Laurel

Matthew 26:36  Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.”

I made it back!  I’m home I’m home!

Guatemala was a life-changing event.  UNBELIEVABLE.

But now I’ve got 6 chances to share it with you (maybe more!) as I fulfill my response to the six ways Seth Barnes says that a short-term missionuntitled trip can change your life.  (Read my 6 previous blog posts beginning with the July 7th post if you are new to my blog – that was the first of the 6 blogs I wrote about this mission trip.)

According to Seth Barnes, the sixth and final way a short-term mission trip can change your life is by growing your faith.  Seth explains, “A good short-term missions will throw you into the deep end, forcing you to the end of your comfort zone and resources, to a place where you’re forced to depend on God in new ways.  This dependence is the posture God is waiting for in order to grow our faith.”

Oh yeah.

I must say I went into this mission trip with my eyes wide open and without expectations of any kind.  It started out as a challenge in just feeling comfortable with leaving.  We were having problems with Amanda and her having enough care – things were a mess! – and I felt awful leaving Ted (who had to work) with trying to figure everything out.  Of course, things worked out and I left – and Amanda was fine – and Ted went to work.  Besides, once I was gone, there was nothing I could do to help back home.  I thought I would worry all week.  But I couldn’t – I didn’t have the time!  I will say that I actually felt at peace and knew in my heart that all was well back home.  And it was.  Thank you God.

As far as growing in my faith and depending on God … that happened in many forms during my week in Guatemala.

One way I found myself having to depend on God was with some of the dental work we did.  Many of the adults in Guatemala had abscessed and hurting teeth that needed extracted.  Here in the States, a dentist or oral surgeon does extractions after an x-ray photo of the tooth they are taking out. We did not have access to x-rays or any kind of fancy extraction tools or equipment.  Many times, Dr. Bisaro went in ‘blind’ and would have trouble getting access to and getting a grip on the tooth he was pulling.  There was nothing much I could do while he was searching.  I would find myself leaning in to the patient and closing my eyes, praying that God would work through Dr.’s hands, through his fingers, and into the instruments he was handling to guide the extraction.  It’s all I could do.  Pray for God’s guiding hand.

DSCI0067

We also did not have high tech steam sterilization equipment.  This is the bin of antiseptic that our instruments got dunked and swished in – then I would rinse them in the tap water (that we weren’t supposed to drink) and start on the next patient.DSCI0096

Most people who travel to Guatemala have to be careful about what they eat or drink so that they do not get sick.  We had a designated restaurant where we ate all our meals.  The owner was a woman who was ‘trained’ how to cook for us weak-stomach Americans so we do not get ill.  We still kept the health of our group a priority in our daily prayers.  No one wanted to get sick.  No one did!  But the food DID get questionable sometimes:

DSCI0053

DSCI0089

Prior to my leaving on this trip there were several persons who expressed concern over my overall safety in being in La Union, Guatemala.  We were housed in a lovely building amongst a cluster of buildings, and behind a chain link fence.  Whenever we came or went, there was a man who acted as gatekeeper and locked and unlocked the gate for us.  I never felt in danger.  I never felt scared.  Even when walking around the streets in the town, people were always kind and respectful.  The children and adults were quick to say “Hola” or “Buenos dias” or even a big-grinned American “Hi!”.  Our prayers for safety were always answered.  God kept us safe.

Here is the gate from inside our cluster of buildings as it opened to the street. DSCI0043

And here is the street view of the gate leading into our buildings.DSCI0087

As we worked each day, letting God direct our paths, we prayed for people to show up who needed dentistry.  Even before we ‘opened’ the people were sitting and waiting outside the building.DSCI0078

We also would finish a day and wonder if the dentistry we did, or the English lessons we helped with, or the people we spoke to, or the care we showed would in any way serve God or benefit these people.  We didn’t always know that for sure.  It is purely by faith that God helped us do His will by planting seeds of friendship and Christian care and love – that they may eventually take root and make a difference.  What we did was not done for US it was done for OTHERS.  It was (and is) in God’s hands.  There was so much hope and life in the eyes of the young people we met.  Hopefully, what we shared will help change things for the better for them.

My trip to Guatemala was fantastic.  It was hard.  It was exhausting.  It was beautiful.  Did it change me?  I think so.  My perspective is definitely different.  I’ve seen people who live happily with so little.  It makes our busy, cluttered lives here seem so superficial.

At one of our first meeting prior to going to Guatemala, Pastor Rick made the comment that a mission trip is like:  A week away that will last a lifetime.

Yeah – what he said!
