amanda 4.2 (2nd blog today)

A few more T’s as it is the featured letter of the day …

“T” is for …

TAH DAH !!!

Amanda has no veins.  I mean – she HAS veins but they are really hard to find and stick and get any blood from.  So, they put a P.I.C.C. line in her arm – surgically implanted IV – so they could have an IV going AND draw blood.  Well it is infusing fluids but would not let people draw blood – it just wouldn’t work.  So they sent a blood draw person, and another one and another one …. they all poked her and got NO blood.  They finally decided to put in a SECOND P.I.C.C. line …. I even signed the papers … sigh.  But then this guy nurse came in and took a look, and took the time, and finessed, and GOT IT WORKING!  So no need for the 2nd P.I.C.C. line.

TAH DAH!

Amanda2

The other “T” for the day starts the next exclamation:

TAKE IT OFF!

Since getting to the ER on Saturday Amanda has had to wear this mask that was forcing oxygenated breaths (almost like being intubated – ya know – the tube down the throat – which we have thus far avoided) almost 24/7 – taking it off only for quick sips of water or a face wash.  Here’s what she’s pretty much looked like for the past 3 days:Amanda1

She was awake enough this evening and alert enough that I asked, could she TAKE IT OFF for a bit?  Amanda had a quiet and lovely hour of bliss – sitting up and breathing with just a little help from an oxygen cannula at her nose – and got to sip lots of water and brush her teeth.  Yes, her face is red and swollen and the hair needs a shampoo and blow dry – but she managed a smile for the camera!  (The thingy on her head is her oxygen probe – her hands are too cold so that it works better on her forehead.)Amanda3

TAKE IT OFF BABY!

So …

Lung function is improving.

But she is weak and limp as a wet dish rag as the staph infection is battled.  No – it is not MRSA (for you medical people) and the next big step is the TEST (sticking with the “T” theme here) to see if it is in her spinal fluid and shunt.  That TEST did not get done TODAY … so we wait for TOMORROW.

That girl sure has a lot of fight in her.

The letter of the day is “T”. Fitting that it is TUESDAY – but that is not why I chose “T”.

“T” is for TEMPERATURE and our room here at the hospital is freezing. I won’t take my fleece jacket off.  Amanda, who is usually always cold, says she is NOT cold – although her hands feel like ice.  She does not have a fever – even though she is fighting an infection – but every once in a while her poor little body shivers and TREMBLES … nasty infection.

“T” is for TEST as we wait to have a spinal TAP done … they need to see if the staff infection has invaded the shunt in her head or not – if it HAS – then we will have new decisions to make.

TIRED. TIRED.  TIRED.  That is a “T” word that I know all of you can understand without explanation.

TOMORROW. I don’t know.  Can’t plan much further out than a day right now.

THANKS – for all the good wishes and prayers.

Matthew 6:34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

And on a fun & light note: from the “Lion King” … Hakuna matata … it means “no worries … for the rest of your days”:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xB5ceAruYrI

BTW I just thought that if there are some of you out there who would like to read ‘the rest of the story’ about Amanda:

Since the letter of the day is “S” ….

Amanda has a STAPH infection … SPOKE to a very nice infectious disease doctor … we aren’t sure of the SOURCE of the infection … but the staph definitely did a number on her lungs … but waiting to see Neuro doctor … making sure staph is not in her brain or her SHUNT …

Another “S”

They got Amanda cleaned up and she was thrilled to take some SIPS of ice water – after that first sip she had a look of pure bliss on her face.  She held her own with just an O2 nasal cannula … breathing on her own.  She is too tired to do anything but will wake up and talk a little when she has the STRENGTH.

The STAPH infection has knocked her on her butt … she is sick sick sick (another “S”) but holding her own … doctors have been great but we SIT and wait and wait and SIT.

Wish I could say more – but not much has happened. We are still in the ICU.  Amanda is not better – no worse.  Like the last time she had pneumonia she is blowing up like a sausage from all the fluids.  Not pretty.  She mostly sleeps while she gets help with her breathing.

I shall try to give you more of what I’m feeling … it seems I have some time here to write.

The letter of the day shall be “S” – and “S” stands for “sad,” “scared,”.and “still.”

Why are Ted and I sad? After her last bout of pneumonia and three weeks of hospitalization, we NEVER wanted to do THAT again.  I’ve been so sad lately ‘cuz I had a feeling she was spiraling downward to this … and she did.  It’s not fair.  For her.  She can’t eat or drink, hooked up to IV’s and breathing machines, black and blue from needle pokes … It’s just not fair.

Why are we scared? The unknown.  How many days?  How many weeks?  How long will this hospitalization be?  How long until we can go home?  How long until Amanda can go home to her apartment?  How long will we live the hospital life?

So that leaves “still”.

Psalm 46;10 Be still and know that I am God.

I’m trying.

Here’s an Amanda update … in case you were wondering …

And…

No news … is just no news.

She’s not getting worse … sleeping a lot … she’s getting help breathing but is requiring less oxygen – that’s a good thing! Can’t eat or drink anything yet.  Waiting for more blood tests and a consult from another doctor to determine if she really is improving and what it is we are really dealing with.

I’ll post more when there’s more to post.

Thanks for your concern and interest and prayers.

I decided that this was the best way to give all of you an update on Amanda … not my usual kind of blog … but the circumstances demand I give y’all some information.

To bring everyone quickly up to speed … ever since Amanda’s awful bout of pneumonia almost 2 years ago we have been diligent in making her do daily deep breathing exercises and monitoring her oxygen levels. Part of keeping her lungs healthy also meant wearing her AVAP mask every night while she sleeps.  It’s like a c-pap or bi-pap mask that snorers or people with sleep apnea wear – it forces air into her airway to keep it open – the AVAP also literally blows breaths.

We have been struggling with Amanda the past six months to keep her mask on all night. We’ve tried everything from bribes and rewards to pleading with her for her own health and safety.  This was probably not the single reason, but her NOT wearing her mask, coupled with some pneumonia that moved in to her lungs – caused her to crash yesterday.

For the past week Amanda was having really poor oxygen numbers (we check her oxygen level with a pulse oximeter – one of those thingys they put on your finger with the red light). She did not have a cold or fever – just bad numbers and maybe a little more tired than usual.  Then I noticed she was breathing pretty shallow and I was trying to get her to cough deeply.

Saturday morning I checked on her before the ladies 8am bible study … she was up and watching TV and was alert although her color wasn’t good. After bible study I checked on her again and she was looking worse.  I packed up her oxygen machine and told her we were going to our house for the day so I could watch her.  I already suspected that we’d be at the ER with her.

When I got her to my house – her color went worse … her lips were purple and she was sweating – although she said she was freezing. I had Ted hook up her oxygen machine and had Amanda in the kitchen in her wheelchair with an oxygen cannula on her nose with 2 liters of oxygen.  Within minutes she turned purple … then gray … then slumped and lost consciousness.

The next part is a blur. Ted and I thought she was gone – right then and there. I told him to call 911.  We didn’t know if she had a heartbeat.  We grabbed her out of her chair and laid her on the family room carpeted floor.  She was gray and her finger tips were dark purple.  I could feel a carotid pulse but it was slow.  Maybe one gasping breathe every minute.  Ted was having problems reaching 911 – probably due to his panicked state on the phone but our dear neighbor Jake, a Trenton cop, heard the call and knew it was us.  I actually started some breaths and chest compressions on Amanda and then we had a room full of paramedics.  Probably 2 ambulances and 3 cop cars out front … I can’t remember exactly.  They worked on Amanda – got the AED on her but I don’t think they had to shock her.  She was still unconscious at this point.

They got her loaded up as fast as they could in the ambulance … I was amazed at how Trenton cop cars appeared everywhere and stopped traffic on West Road and Fort street while the ambulance raced through. Not the kind of escort you’d want – but it was pretty unbelievable.  Thanks Jake.

So she regained consciousness at the hospital. PICC line is in … meds … oxygen … nonstop AVAP mask … basically a case of pneumonia but with Amanda’s compromised lungs and poor breathing – it’s kinda a bad situation.  She’s stable.  We are in ICU.  She is alert and tries to talk (she’s not allowed to take the breathing mask off – her O2 sats drop too much) and is tired from it all – so she sleeps a lot.  So far we’ve not had to be intubated.

Yesterday was a tough day. Thanks to neighbor and Trenton cop Jake, to Pastor Rick, Kim Schutt, and Jack Scola for stopping by the hospital ER.  Thanks to the EMT people – you were all great and very kind.  They even checked back in on us in the ER throughout the day.  Kathy Green – your son was wonderful.  I am still numb – I think even a bit PTSD from it all.

So that’s where we are. Not where we want to be of course.  But we are here.

Thanks for all your prayers and thoughts. Things are stable for now.  No – we don’t need anything.  We’ll keep you up-dated.

In my last blog, I shared with you my travels to California and promised to take you with me to the next destination.

Here goes!

After landing in Detroit on Monday night, I slept one short night in my own bed before leaving early the next morning for a drive to Knoxville, TN.

My daughter Jillian was on break from vet school in St. Kitts and was in the States to be with her husband Andy.  (Complicated, I know!)  We shopped, dined, and played tourist for a few days before I drove her north so that she could fly out of Detroit to return to school.

The Smokey Mountains are gorgeous:

We even took a hike to visit my Falls!

But it was wonderful to see Andy, Jillian, and ‘grand-dog’ Roy:

Fun fun fun four days!

And THEN after returning Friday night to MI from TN … we took Jillian to the airport at 4am and headed to Grand Rapids to see daughter Kristen and her husband Ric.  We had a marvelous day ‘playing’ around Grand Rapids.  I didn’t take any photos that day except for a pic of the ‘grand-cat’ Oliver:

OMG!

Sunday was a sailing day and Monday was laundry laundry laundry!

I was pooped 🙂

Seeing friends is great – spending time with family is better than great!

Sorry to not be blogging about more spiritual or meaningful subjects.  I’ve been distracted and vacationing.  I just wanted to share it with you!

Hope y’all are doing well now that we have to bid summer farewell and get into the fall routine.  Just a reminder that bible studies are starting up at St. Paul Church in Trenton … I know it’s hard to take the time … so you must MAKE time and meet us at the Panera at West and Allen on Saturday mornings at 8am for the Saturday Morning Women’s Drop-in Bible Study.  Just show up for a lesson and fellowship (and a coffee and a bagel).

grace and peace to you,

just Laurel

and that’s what it’s all about

You know that spinning ride at the amusement park?  Or maybe you are a roller coaster kind of person.  Well whatever kind of ride is your pleasure, I think you will understand the feeling you get after the ride, when the ride is over, and your body feels like it is still moving and twisting.  It can throw you off balance.

That’s how I feel.  Only my ‘ride’ was a vacation that took me for four days to California, then a four day drive down and back to Knoxville, TN and finally a day’s drive back and forth to Grand Rapids, Michigan.  The ride was fun!  But I am still spinning.  I’m afraid I haven’t settled back into the repetitive daily routine yet.  And with that, I apologize for not blogging for a while … time to get back into the groove.  Here’s some news from my travels!

Our 4 day trip to California was … sorry to use your word, Ted … but it really was … unbelievable!  Flying is not my favorite mode of travel.  I dislike it for the nauseating way I feel during take-offs and landings.  I find it incredible that I am traveling at close to 500mph (is that right?) and so very very very high in the sky.  (A ‘cruising altitude’ of 38,000 feet??)

DSCI0070DSCI0071

It just doesn’t seem real or possible to be traveling that fast and that high up.  But I resign myself to flying as a mode of travel because in just a few hours of travel, I can find myself on the other side of the country.  Amazing.

California was interesting … marvelous … different from Michigan … beautiful in places … full of history … and hot and crowded.  We were mostly in the Los Angeles area with some trips to surrounding areas.  We saw the infamous “Hollywood” sign:

Some Hollywood ‘stars’ and handprints:

But despite all the fancy touristy California sights to see, the best part of the long weekend was the people we visited and hung out with.  Friday night we met up with an old friend of Ted’s.  It was fun to hear Ted and Jamie talk about old times and she was easy to like – we became fast friends as well!  She took us to a place to eat on Malibu Beach where I had the best fish and shrimp tacos EVER.  I ate with my feet in the sand on the beach.  Precious are old friends.

Saturday we played tourist with a wonderful bunch of Michigan friends – you see we were all there for a wedding of a common friend!

Saturday night was a dinner hosted by the groom’s family.  There was lots of food, friends, family, and the view was incredible!

Sunday we met up with a friend of our daughters who was in LA to pursue an acting career.  MATT!  It was refreshing to share lunch and old stories with him, as well as catch up of all the new stuff in his life!

Sunday evening was the most beautiful wedding of Bethany Davis to Kristian Perez.  Good times.  Good people.  A great wedding.

California was great – and yet I know that we only saw a small part of it.  It is a very long state with lots of differences from north to southern CA.  But truly, it was not nearly as sweet and memorable as the people we spent the weekend with.  Reuniting with Jamie and Matt, enjoying the comfort of our familiar Michigan friends, and being part of a wedding celebration.  Ahhh.  That’s what it’s all about folks.

People and hearts and relationships and caring and loving.
